Making Planes That Don’t Fly

I recently got the chance to take my first Woodworking class here at the Folk School. It was the “Making a Traditional Moulding Plane” class, where we made a variety of 19th century quarter sawn beech planes using antiques as examples, and using many antique tools to do the work. It was  a great class that had been very skillfully prepared and presented. It was taught by Bill Anderson and Peter Ross.

Fall Festival: October 5 & 6


Share in a celebration of timeless Appalachian culture at our 45th annual Fall Festival. Strolling through our wooded campus, you’ll meet over 250 fine craft vendors offering their work for sale. Enjoy the Quilt Show, and watch over 30 talented artisans demonstrate their craft. Catch the excitement as you view musicians and dancers on two stages throughout the weekend. Bring the youngsters for lively kids’ activities, and choose from a nice selection of tasty Festival food. Daily admission: $5 for adults, $3 for ages 12-17, and free for children under 12.
